What is your Personality Type? – The MBTI

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most popular personality test, with about two million people taking it each year.

The MBTI is not a diagnostic tool.

It is designed to describe typical characteristics of people with different personality types.

The four categories are:

introversion/extraversion

sensing/intuition

thinking/feeling

judging/perceiving

According to the MBTI, each person is said to have one preferred quality from each category, producing 16 unique personality types.

The most common type is the ISFJ (Introversion, Sensing, Feeling and Judging) personality type, known as ‘The Protector.’  The most common personality type among women, the ISFJ type occurs in 14% of the population.

You must pay to take the official, MBTI-branded version of the test, but there is a free version available that you may take online here.

Is the test accurate and reliable?

Some say that the test is not accurate not reliable because personality traits are normally distributed. That is, most people score in the middle, with few people scoring very high or very low on any trait.  Therefore, it could be misleading and over-simplifying to claim that one trait is preferred over another.
